Hi Neighbour, I’m Akuah (Ah-koo-ah) Frempong
Akuah is honoured to put her name forward to run as Centre Ward Town Councillor. Having lived in Whitby for over a decade, growing up in the White Oaks Community in West Ward, Akuah moved to Centre Ward and quickly built community. She has had the privilege to watch Whitby grow over the years and is stepping up to serve the residents of Centre Ward at Town Hall.Akuah holds degrees in Nursing and Management of Global Health Systems from Western University and has worked with the healthcare and social service sectors, primarily supporting people experiencing homelessness with access to healthcare services. Akuah has the honour of serving on multiple regional committees centred on homelessness, poverty reduction and inclusion. Akuah serves as a Community Member on the 1635 Dundas Street Shelter Committee, working closely with the Region of Durham’s Housing Division, community partners and local residents, advocating for shelter patrons, bringing forth community questions and working collaboratively to ensure integration between the shelter and the Whitby community. She is currently developing a Community Engagement series as the site moves into Phase 2 of its plan.
Most recently, Akuah joined Durham’s Poverty Response Steering Committee where she works with community organizations and industry leaders on poverty reduction strategies. Her particular focus is on housing where she’s developing an engagement plan for community to understand the complexities of housing, the need for non-market sustainable growth and how residents can be more engaged in public planning and development.
Akuah is a proud volunteer at the Feed the Need in Durham Market Food Bank in Whitby, assisting clients weekly with food insecurity and just finished her first term on the Durham Regional Anti-Racism Taskforce, working collaboratively with equity and community groups across the Region on anti-hate initiatives, promoting a safer and more inclusive Durham for all.
Akuah looks forward to the opportunity to bring this experience, drive and advocacy locally to Town Hall!
What I’m Running On
Care - How we look out for one another including our most vulnerable, ensuring our ward and town is accessible, inclusive and is a place where everyone can live, work, play and thrive! We achieve this through active listening, innovation and ensuring care for not only our residents but the environment and our green spaces.
Community - How we engage and connect with one another to raise awareness, support initiatives that make an impact, and bring residents together around shared values. We do this through ongoing community engagement, promotion of arts and culture and working with all levels of government to ensure we have the funding we need to serve residents now and in the future.
Collaboration - How we work together to develop practical solutions that strengthen our community and promote opportunity and sustainability as we deliver on programs and services we need to have a vibrant and safe community. This means advocating for responsible development, working collaboratively to address social issues using upstream approaches based on facts and ensuring transparency in decision making that impacts our community, all while supporting economic growth.
