Priorities

While more Regional jurisdiction, the housing crisis impacts all aspects of our ward and Town. With a professional background in supporting people experiencing homelessness and working with the Toronto shelter system, I have seen first hand how the housing crisis impacts communities. It’s not just mental health, it’s affordability and providing people with supports so they can thrive and stay in their homes and integrate into the community. Many of these investments and supports come from the Province.

Through the Region’s Housing Durham program there are already a number of affordable housing projects underway including in Whitby! But we need more! I will advocate for more investments in affordable housing projects across the Region as we can’t fund them solely through property taxes. We need more investments from upper levels of government to meet the growing crisis.

Traffic and congestion are issues that also coupled with safety. From speeding to e-bike use, to transit, our roads are busier than ever. We need more traffic calming measures and resources based on needs in our community to address safety.

Should residents need support with traffic calming measures, I will be there to help you gain support, navigate barriers and knock on doors to get signatures of support to bring to the Town.

An inevitable that keep rising! While we need property taxes to fund everyday services , we must be mindful and transparent about where our taxes are going. With the rise in the cost of living and continued uncertainty, communities are struggling to get ahead and maintain the level of service with the current tax rates. The majority of taxes (55%) goes to the Region, the Town gets 34% and 11% goes to education.

I will advocate to ensue we get what we need, collaborate with the Town and upper levels of government to attract more businesses, while putting residents at the centre and making sure investments are not at the expense of residents.
